God's words/ law/ precepts/ commands/ demands are so wonderful. Obedience to these words might not be comfortable but it is life-giving. In his words we come to know more of him (Romans 10:17).
Again and again, we see in the Bible how obedience gives life and disobedience leads to death. The Psalmist knows that life is only possible by keeping God's word as his portion (Psalm 73:26). Jeremiah put his hope in the Lord and calls him his portion (Lamentations 3:24).
You and I need these words in order to live. Living in this world will not be easy but God promised peace in our hearts if we abide in his words (John 15:7). He promised not to leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5), so be content on who God is for you in Christ Jesus.
As we embark a new year may we look backwards unto the historical work of God in his Son Jesus (John 3:16), live today with the strength that he faithfully supplies (Philippians 4:13), walk forward looking to Jesus, the founder and author of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
O how I love your words Lord. Remind me moment by moment that I can't do anything of lasting value if you are not my portion. Save me from my own ways (Psalm 119:59). Help me to desire you more than I desire the comforts of this world.
